Sweet Saturday Sample of "Sunny Days, Moonlit Nights"

At this point in the book, Sunny has recently reconnected with her childhood friend, Karen, from the summer community, The Birches. They find they are still close and confide in each other and laugh together like when they were kids. In this excerpt, their conversation has turned to Sunny's love life:

“Now you’re in love with the heartthrob of our youth, Mickey
Foster?”
“Who said anything about being in love?” Sunny bristled.
“Please…you can’t fool me. I understand you two are spending a lot of time together. Word travels fast in this community. How can you spend time with him and not be in love? Don’t you remember when we were thirteen?”
“Of course I do. But I’m thirty-three now, rational, sane, no
longer prone to crushes,” she asserted.
“But this is Mickey…uh, Mike Foster we’re talking about.
Perpetual hunk,” Karen said.
“I know, I know,” she said, avoiding Karen’s stare.
“Look me in the eye and tell me you’re not in love with him,”
Karen demanded.
“I…I…I’m not…not in love,” she said, trying to say it and look
at Karen.
“Just as I thought. You can’t. Don’t fight it, Sunny. He’s a
great guy. You two would be fabulous together. Haven’t we always
known that?”
“That was baby stuff. We’re older now.”
“Still. A great guy is a great guy, whether he’s eighteen or
thirty-eight. Why are you fighting it?”

Thanks for stopping by, Jennifer, and for the kind words. She has a good reason to deny it, I'm afraid.

Decisions, decisions. Sounds like a tough choice.
