“Katherine—”

“Answer me, Please.” I looked up and stared into his eyes. I wasn’t judging. I had to know. I had to confirm my suspicions before I got myself into a hell of a lot of trouble covering up for him. He needed to see in my eyes what he could feel in our bond. My entire life was forfeit once I destroyed all evidence that might lead anyone to him.

He shifted up onto his knees and moved to me. His strong hands encircled my shoulders and it was all I could do not to fall into his arms. His black eyes, fierce and magnetic captured mine as he stared into me for several long minutes.

“Katherine, you need to understand. My kind. We. We are human and we are not. At our core we were once human as you are. We think, look, and act much like humans, but deeper, inside our damned souls, we are predators.”

“So you kill for the fun of it?”

“No Katherine. It is the hunt. Our survival. Our sustenance.”

“To drink blood?” I could only make assumptions but vampire lore was fairly mainstream these days. Drinking blood, can’t go out in the sun, fangs, and all that bullshit.

“Yes,” he said.

“If it is the blood you need, can’t you just get it from a blood bank or something?”

“This is where humans lose their feeble grasp on what a vampire is.” His eyes flared glossy black and then narrowed on me and I felt like a gimp-legged rabbit that rounded a corner to find a hungry wolf. Dead.

“Well?”

“We are predators. A leopard can be given a carcass to eat and it will sustain him, but he will wither over time without the hunt. A vampire is much the same. Even more so, Katherine. I hunt because I am a hunter. I kill only what I need to survive, but kill I must. It is what I am.”

I asked a blunt question so I shouldn’t have been surprised by his abrupt declaration. My skin broke out in goose bumps and fear crept into my throat and strangled me as I gazed into those eyes. I could feel it as easily as I could read it. He was the pinnacle of the food chain. There was none higher. No killer—no beast was as deadly as the vampire before me. The one who had claimed me. Who owned my heart.

A bit about the book:
Katherine Wells is Cleveland’s top homicide detective and she’s hot on the trail of the Antoinette killer. The string of burnt and beheaded bodies have little in common, except they keep turning up. In search of clues, she encounters Alexander. His intoxicating old world persona captivates her and she suddenly finds herself in a torrid love affair. The passion is overwhelming and her sense of law falls into blissful chaos.

As an elder vampire, Alexander struggles for anonymity in the modern world. Killing isn’t personal; it’s to prevent them from becoming the undead. His kind can’t be discovered. With Katherine’s investigation getting too close to the truth, the other vampires demand he eliminate Detective Wells.

Katherine discovers Alexander’s supernatural secret and he learns Katherine’s the detective he must silence. The revelations are shocking. He’s everything she ever wanted and everything she stood against. Torn between a love like no other and the law she’s sworn to uphold, she must choose. Against time, the police and the other vampires, they must destroy the evidence she’s collected and join the undead.

I must say, anything with a vampire in the story line usually captures my attention. This book is no exception. From some of the reviews on amazon, to the excerpt that was posted, it leaves a person, at least me, wanting to read more.

I haven't read any paranormal stories besides Anne Rice's books, I want to read Brindle's and give the genre another chance.
