Sweet Saturday Sample of "Now and Forever, Callie's Story"

Thank you for stopping by. Today I have two different excerpts of my free prequel, "Now and Forever, Callie's Story". We start with a snippet of chapter one and then jump to Callie meeting Kyle for the first time.

Chapter One
Callie swore to her sister she knew something was up because the sound of the doorbell was different. The teen remembered going to the big picture window in the living room that Saturday to watch sheets of rain come down hard from heavily clouded skies. Boredom crept into her body and she slumped down on the window seat, tracing behind raindrops racing down the pane with her finger. Then the doorbell rang. Afterward, everything seemed to happen in slow motion.

She opened the door to reveal a grim-faced policeman dressed in dark blue, water dripping off his hat, his hands nervously clenching and releasing. She looked up at him with a questioning gaze until she saw the look of sadness in his eyes. Her hand flew to cover her mouth as tears filled her eyes.
“Callie Richards?” he asked. “There‟s been an accident.”
Callie stood there, not hearing him, just staring.
“There has been an accident. Your parents…” He gestured helplessly. “You‟d better come with me.”
She stood still, her feet riveted to the floor the tears cascading down her face almost as fast as the raindrops on the pane. The policeman heaved a sigh and entered the house, found a raincoat behind the front door and an umbrella. He helped her don the coat and opened the umbrella.
“It's the rain. It washed out some of the small bridge over Chestnut Creek. The car skidded on a mud slide. It happened fast. Come on, let's go, Callie,” he said, gently taking her elbow and guiding her to the police car.

A few days later at the house of her neighbors the Westons...:
Plopped on the sofa attempting to read, Callie answered the door when the bell rang.
“Is John home?” asked the most handsome young man she had ever seen.
Callie nodded and stepped back to let him in. The young man's gaze swept over her slowly, drinking in the beauty of her face and figure, stopping briefly at the cleavage peeking out of the neckline of her tank top. She blushed under his scrutiny.
“Kyle!” John loped down the stairs two at a time.
Kyle Maine pried his attention reluctantly from Callie to greet his best friend. A brief hug, a slap on the shoulder then Kyle turned to Callie.
“New sister? You been keepin' something from me?”
“She's a neighbor. Callie Richards, this is Kyle Maine.”
Kyle nodded at Callie, his lips parting into a wide smile. Her eyes met his and she nodded. He was about five foot ten inches, sandy blond hair and had a bright smile, which warmed Callie‟s frozen heart.
“Hey, beautiful, wanna join us?” Kyle asked.
Callie's hand opened up and the sweater she was holding slid to the floor. John put his hand on Kyle's arm and shook his head slightly in response to Kyle's questioning glance. Mary Weston appeared from the kitchen.
“That's a fine idea, Kyle. It would do this young lady good to get out of the house. Do you feel up to it, Sweetheart?” Mary asked, putting her arm around Callie's shoulder.
Callie's large turquoise eyes connected with Kyle's. The room fell quiet as she gazed at him, a blush rising from her chest to her throat. Kyle's smile vanished, replaced by a heated stare that made her shiver slightly. Mary stepped back. With a silent nod, Callie bent down to pick up the sweater she dropped at the same time Kyle did. Their hands touched, sending tingles shooting up along Callie's arm, and she backed off, allowing him to retrieve the garment.
